Default Lightroom Tagging Question

Hi,

I've recently started using Lightroom 3 trial version and have started sorting out my photographs. I have a question with respect to tagging feature of lightroom 3 before i go ahead and buy it.

I've stored all my photographs on an external hard drive because i've to frequently travel and share my photographs with other people. my question is:

If i give a tag in Lightroom 3 on my laptop and save it in my external hard drive, if i open in another computer having Lightroom 3, can they also see the tag.???

Thanks in advance,

Regards

Vj.

In short - yes. As long as your are working from a catalog any and all changes you make will be saved to the catalog. I do this all the time when I work on stuff in the field and then bring it home to my main machine.

The only thing that does not translate is presets. Both installs must have the same presets installed prior to opening the catalog to ensure the changes stay the same. If you have not installed any other presets ignore this as it does not apply.

Hey Lzzy,

Thanks for the reply... but i guess i wasnt clear enough in my question...HOW DO YOU MAKE SURE IT WORKS ON SAME CATALOGUE...

I started making changes in my PC (win based) while all the images were saved on my hard drive... i did changes like white balance match, tagging and stuff like that... and then i took my hard drive to my work place and shared with my colleagues.. they couldnt see any of my adjustments..??

I'm really a novice with Lightroom, so i hope you'll be able to bear with me...

Thanks.

When I set up a folder in LR I make a folder for the topic and put all my pictures in there. Then I make a new catalog and put that in the same folder. This way when I move the folder all of its info goes with it.

If your pics are not organized this way go ahead and set it up this way. LR will most likely lose the images for the moment. No need to panic. In library mode double click the "?" next to the image and guide it to the new location for the image. It should automatically update the others that were moved also.

1. Arrange your directory as I listed before. Main folder with the pictures and catalog folder inside.
2. Open catalog
3. Update file locations
4. Back up catalog and then it is ready to move to as many machines as you like.

ALSO - if you are using presets the same presets must be installed on the new machine to reflect the appropriate adjustments after transplant. There is an option to save presets with the cat but I am not sure off hand where this option is found.

This all sounds complicated but once you get it right it is so easy you will be able to do it in seconds flat.
