Default My first ever effort

Good evening,

Basically I have always had an interest in photgraphy, this photo was taken while in Lake Davenport, Orlando. I really liked my early morning trip to the lake to do a spot of fishing and the sunrise was far too nice to not grab a quick snap.

I had the camera set to 'easy' and it is a Sony cybershot point and click DSC-W130.

Editing wise I simply levelled the horizon a little and brought the contrast down, I personally think it gave it an entirely new look for such little tinkering.

Please feel free to comment, I know that I'm far from perfect, and I'm big enough and ugly enough to take any criticism!

I hope you like it.

Welcome Dave, The little cameras will do in a pinch right? You weren't too far from Green Swamp. I get down that way fairly regularly and always try to take my lunch in Green Swamp. See deer, hog and turkey quite often.

Some people are hesitant to be honest, but Im not afraid to hurt your feelings. The photo is really not that good, the edited version is actually worse than the original.

The sun is way too blown out. you have completely spiked your highlights on too much of the photo.
I can't tell what is in focus.
The edited photo looks like all you did was darken it, but the sun still hurts my eyes to look at.
Mostly the sun kills this photo, there is not enough color for a sunset photo.

Try to get a better exposure by pointing the camera lens just slightly left or right of the sun and then holding your shutter button halfway down to lock the exposure, then point it to where you want to photograph and press it down the rest of the way. Try it and you will be surprised

Hi 3bay,

Not hurt my feelings at all, I am here to learn and criticism is a tool ato aid that. I am taking delivery of a Canon 600d tomorrow. I am really excited about exploring the world of photography and hope to receive further tips and advice from people such as yourself. I look forward to taking photographs that make people smile.
P.s. Sorry the sun hurt your eyes

Has nothing to do with being honest and hurting the guy's feelings. Has everything to do with where he posted it and what the subforum rules are. He wants a critique then he posts it in the proper critique section and I will give him a critique. Simple.

Otherwise I comment on the parts I liked and welcome them to DPS.

Actually 3bayjunkie.. if you're going to slam someone (even with good intentions) make sure you get your facts straight.

Using the method you describe above only locks the focus.. it has nothing to do with exposure which is the issue in this photo. All you've told the OP to do is lock the focus left or right of the sun.. once he recomposes it's going to meter again and likely get the same result.

OP, though I don't know your camera, read up on the Exposure lock function in your manual, if it has one, that'll do what 3bayjunkie was trying to tell you. Then you can start ensuring the part of the image you want properly exposed actually is.
