Smile Ww2 planes vintage

before:
This is after i went opened it in photo shop (cs3) and lighted it in curves a bit.
check plain5 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
after:
ww2 photo1 copy2 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Step1: I converted the picture to gray scale.
Step2: select all (ctrl+A)and copy the layer
Step3: use the filter bitmat (Image-mode-bitmat) on the first layer
Step4: paste a new layer and change the layer opacity to around 45% (give or take)
-optional-
Step5: If you would like the boarder simply select and area using the rectangular magnetic tool do inverse select and add black and a feather to the edges.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I had a blast figuring this all out there are a few ways to do the vintage look but for the time period and looking at photos from then this looked pretty close. Hope it turns out well for you.

Why did you decide to convert your photo to a bitmap?

I looked up a few different tutorials on it and that was the one I found the easiest and seem to give the best effect for that photo. Also it gives the crackly effect sometimes found in older photographs from that day.
