Thumbs up "Antique" Summer Watering Can

Took this photo yesterday and knew immediately how I wanted it to look-even as I took the photo. Couldn't wait to get home and look at it on the computer. I was very pleased with it as-is, but still wanted to play with texturizing it a bit. So here's the before/afters. I'm extremely happy with how it came out! What do you guys think? Is it too much?? I know how easy it is to get "texture-happy", lol. Thoughts anyone??? (I'm totally open to criticism-on the post-production OR the photo itself-don't worry about offending me. )

I think the texture part works well. Post work like this is so subjective - just do what pleases your eye.

For the photo itself: again, subjective. But to me, I'd rather see either the entire can as part of a larger scene/setting, or get close and maybe make an abstract shot out of it. As the photo is now, it's right in the middle of the two. Part of the can is cut off, and we can't tell the context, yet we can't see the finer details, either. And, the light is a bit flat, too.

Can you re-shoot?

Glad to see you experimenting. Having fun?

Very true-this kind of thing is very subjective. But I'm very happy with it.

Actually, the composition of this shot was intentional. I didn't want to zoom further out because the "context" would have ruined the mood of the shot. This was taken at a nursery so there were a bunch of plastic containers of various plants all over the place stacked on wooden/concrete "shelves". I intentionally cropped that all out of the shot because I wanted it to look more natural, like the watering can could have just been sitting in anyone's yard or wherever you imagined it to be. As far as getting closer and doing an abstract shot, I loved the watering can too much as a whole to just focus on one part of it (actually, I couldn't pick ONE part I liked best). Hence. But I'll keep your ideas in mind for next time.

You think the light is flat? Hm. I didn't really consider that much. If I go back and try again, how would you propose I improve the lighting?

Yes, I CAN reshoot-assuming the watering can is still there. Not certain I'll get back to that nursery before it's gone. But I would love to go back! I could spend hours in that nursery taking all kinds of shots! And I just started playing with the macro setting on my camera so I'd love to go practice that there!

YES! SO much fun!! I'm still very pleased with this shot. But thanks for your critique! Always happy to hear what others think of my work.

For the light, having light that's brighter, "warmer," and a bit more directional might give this type of photo some extra pop. If the can is still there, could you move it to a space with better light, in a place with perhaps better compositional possibilities? Maybe one where you have as a background a textured wall, some plants, an open field, etc.?

Just some thoughts. Feel free to adopt or ignore as you like.
