Default Rossie's Retouch

An old snap of my friend Rossie that I decided would be good practice for a re-touch project. First some Lightroom adjustments trying to recover the blown out background, and then Photoshop using the split high pass technique to clean it up.

I think it turned out quite well considering

Thumbs up

Nicely rescued but the eyes are too heavily enhanced.

It might just be me, but the little bit of light on her noes keeps drawing my attention. Maybe try to spot remove it? Overall its recovered well, and also agree the eyes might be a little bit heavy enhanced, but that doesnt distract me.

Great job, but the eyes are overdone to my taste as well, that color is just unnatural

I think you should start by getting her properly exposed. She is probably 2/3 to a full stop under, so use your Lightroom exposure slider to get her fixed first. Now, the background is not the subject of the shot, and I think I much prefer it blown out, as the details there do not confuse the eye. Remember, the entire shot does not need to be properly exposed, and it is totally fine to have the background go white. In fact, sometimes that is a wonderful addition to the shot. I think once you fix the exposure on her face, the rest of the retouching will be much easier. Again, don't worry about the background, worry about the subject.

Yeah I can see that, I can try to smooth out the nose highlights. Thanks!

Next time I suggest you use a soft focus. It hides all the flaws like pimples and all. It gives a really good look.
