Cool A flat shot layered 10 ways

I wanted to try out a different Photoshop technique so I grabbed a candid and started to play with it in Photoshop.

  • Cleaned it up, liquify and adjusted the arm and nose.
  • Cloned, patched, and healed the neck
  • Lightened shadows in the face (heal brush in lighten mode)
  • Blur mask for softer skin
  • Burn and doge mask to give the body some contrast
  • Screen mask for the eyes and teeth
  • Contrast mask to add depth to the iris
  • A new layer mask with the background brought out in RAW with fill, blacks, clarity
  • Contrast mask to add depth to the background
  • Vibrance mask to add some colour to the background

I ended up with 10 layers for the after image. The after colour is correct (her shirt is the correct colour in the after shot), before is from camera with AWB.

Here's a closer shot of her face so you can see the Photoshop of the neck. I tried to keep the collarbone shadow but lose the shadow and whatnot.

I don't think it turned out too bad but opinions and suggestions are more then welcome.

I know it was just a random shot I snapped quickly while setting up (she didn't pose for it, I just saw it and snapped this) but is it that bad? Is there something off that my untrained eye is missing? Don't worry about being harsh, I can take it. I'm here to learn.

It does have a layered feel to it, like you took three pictures and just placed them on top of each other. Also she does have a lot of headroom. I just woke up so I'll let someone else chime in.

I was trying to keep with the 2:3 ratio but ya I see what you mean, bad composure on my part. I could crop it in more and see what I can come up with but lesson learned... compose better even on quick snaps as you'll never know.

Thanks for the input, much appreciated.

That's a cool effect! One thing though, if you're going to get rid of half her arm...at least make the rest of her body match it! It looks a bit unnatural! Great job otherwise with the depth, love it!

That's a nice try, but I think you should've flattened the layer and smudged the edges a bit. That would havel ooked perfect
