Talking Chilly cherries

I have always found snow, ice and frost aren't the simplest subject matter, and add to that my Rebel T1i was only a few days old. Although unwilling to shoot on full auto mode, in full manual I didn't yet know how to modify all the settings when and where I needed to.

Fortunately, for that reason, I shot everything in RAW.

After:
After

Corrected the white balance and exposure using photoshop's raw tool. Created new duplicate layer, selected a rough oval around my cherries, feathered the selection by around 250 pixels, inverted the selection and deleted. Set the blend mode to multiply. Reduced opacity. Voila, I have a vignette.

Created another duplicate layer from the background, and used the black and white adjustment tool. Created a black and white version of the image that highlighted what I wanted to highlight (the frost, the yellow veins in the cherries, the texture in the tree branch). Set the blending mode to screen and adjusted the opacity. Pretty sure that's about it.

The t1i has been fantastic! I've been a huge fan of canon for ages but this is my first dslr. I am still working on finding my way around all the different features and settings but so far I honestly have nothing but good things to say about the camera... You will really love it!

Thanks for the feedback on my pic!

+3 on the red. the first picture's red looks much better. Otherwise good job fixing a dark image.

+1 on the canon t1i. I got one dec 2009. LOVE it. I put it in a small lowepro adventura 140 bag and carry it EVERYwhere. I know some people must think I'm weird for carrying it (it could be mistaken for a purse from far off - but then again, you dont tangle with a man with a purse, you dont know whats going on in his head), but I dont care.
