I'm doing an experiment of getting Colour and B&W images in the same picture and it seems to be getting on ok. Any critiques are welcome!

oops my apologies! Here's how I did it:
I used PhotoShop 7 (any Photoshop would do) and opened up the file I wanted to work on. If the layers arent merged, merge the layers together then right click on Background (in layers panel) and Duplicate Layer. Now you have two copies of the same layer, desaturate the background layer so it's B&W then go to duplicate layer and use the erase tool. With the erase tool, start erasing the area around the subject (in this case the horse), you'll see that the eraser tool removes the picture, revealing the B&W layer and keep on going until the area you want is B&W. Merge the layers together then Duplicate the layer again, right click on the 2nd layer and go to Blending Options, there you can play with the lighting, for this one I used Soft Light (or Overlay, one of those two). Click OK then merge the layers again and there's the finished product. I'm not too good at explaining but I hope that I've explained in a detail of how to do this type of image via photoshop. |
