I read a post on this site recently about taking pictures of water droplets and decided to give it a shot. I was a little limited in supplies (canon digital elph without manual focus meant using a pair of scissors as something to focus on before shooting, and my general lack of planning and organization meant a colourful plastic bag as a backdrop) but that just makes things more interesting
. I created duplicate layers and used various blending modes (trial and error) to get the effect. Mostly this involved a duplicate layer where I'd changed the colour and contrast, and then setting the blending mode to hard light. Ended up not liking the orange of my backdrop so much, so I changed it (using a hue/saturation adjustment layer) when I tried to crop and enhance the photos.
