Default First attempt at any sort of post!

I've been taking casual photos for years and I'm trying to get more serious about it, bought myself a XSi and am trying to learn as I go.

I was out taking pictures of my car and while driving through the lower level of a parking deck, found this really odd lighting going on. It was very sunny out (no clouds at all) and the way it came in to the deck, the shadows were really dark. I thought it was a cool effect and decided to park the car across some spots and see what sort of shot I could get.

Anyways, it came out like this:

Not exactly what I wanted, the shadows were way too light and it just didn't look right. So I decided to tinker around in Lightroom and see what sort of picture I could come out with, which resulted in this:

A bit more exagerated than it really was, but I think the effect is cool. The extremely bright light from the outside has, what I think is a really cool effect on the car.

Forgive me if this is the wrong section, but before/after seemed to fit what I was talking about.

The second one is better, I think if you removed the harsh highlights on the body panels it would make it look alot better though. But as for the effect your going for...well done !

Nice, I like the 2nd one, especially how the bright backlighting emphasizes the sleek shape of the car! I find the green a bit distracting though...maybe try it in black and white/monotone??

nice tone.. try to do a HDR on this pic.. will help you remove the harsh background light and make the car prominent..

Here is a nice example of where two exposures can be sweet. 2 unique photos, one exposed for the cool light, and another exposed just for the car. In photoshop you can put them on layers and use the blending mode "lighten" to get a shot that has both elements exposed properly. You have to do this on the ground, or on a tripod of course, cause you can't move the camera at all between the images. We all learn a bit more with every photo we take, and you have a good eye for seeing light, so already have a huge step completed.
