Lady in Blue

My first attempt at making a picture of smoke...unfortunately, I only have an on camera flash to work with at the minute, but I am still pretty happy with the capture. The post processing involved adjusting levels to black out the background and using the hue/saturation sliders to add the blue colour to the smoke. There was also some clone stamping to remove some of the 'wispiness'.

Nice PP work. Next time try shooting against black velvet with a table lamp or another light behind the smoke

Thanks Jeff...This photo was taken against black velvet, with a desk lamp above the smoke. I have just tried using the lighting from the side and behind and the results are in the SYS - Other section. I still had to use the on camera flash, so I think I will have to go to the shop and purchase a flash synch cord for my 380EX to get some more powerful lighting Thanks again for the suggestion!

After reading an article on DPS, I just HAD to try smoke photography. I only had an on camera flash, as well, and mine turned out just the same -- bright, blue background. It gave me an excuse to buy an off camera flash that I had been wanting anyway, and it was definitely worth it. Made a world of difference in my shots.

What works best for me is black background (obviously), off camera flash directly to the side of the smoke, with a flag attached to the side of the flash facing the background to prevent bleed over.

Nice job with the editing, though! Your final product turned out much better than my first attempts with the on camera flash!
