This is my first or second shot in 'bulb mode' on my Pentax K10d. I used a remote and the 18-55mm kit lens was out to 50mm. I held the shutter for about 8 seconds or so. I can recall the aperture but not at this writing. I have positive feelings about the composition; however, I am open to other helpful points of view. I thought B&W was dramatic and I used Picasa2 'B&W focal' to bring color to one side of the subject window. I shot this in JPEG and let the camera cook the photo. Thanks All. P.S. I am new to DPS community and happy to be here.

geotography, Welcome

The window and diner are inviting and at first look the composition is too. Then I look back repeatedly to the table in left window, try to read the sign above it, get drawn to the upper right white area, then the black expanse of awning, and finally notice how the corner of the lower window touches the frame, an attention-getter. So, I liked it, then it made me tired. I thought about a crop of the left bright window table: that cuts the sign. Moving the sign over the main colored window, lightening it just to make it readable, then cloning in a little more wall below the window, then cropping left and right to feature window and sign would give you a portrait view, and turn the original into an edit project.

I'd take it over, with an eye towards a simpler composition.

You know, I've seen it mentioned here and elsewhere, but signs are a "dangerous" thing to have in photos when they're out of focus because the eye naturally wants to try to read them. So unless they're useful to the photo (like this article I was reading today at DIYPhotography), then they tend to be more distracting than anything.

Thank you all. The photo had some redemption with the new crop. I will take the shot over with your advice.
