Default My first critique submission =)

The young girl was playing when the old man took out a sax and asked her if he could play a tune with her.

Well it shows two generations together and the partial color looks good with this background in mind.

Is this 2 pictures in one or did you just alter the colour of the old gentleman ? I'm new to this but think if its one picture the focus was wrong as the gentleman is ok but the young lady is a bit on the blurry side .

no its the one picture manipulated. yeah the focus is off a bit so I played it up more to give it more of vintage feel I guess.

Sid,

Thanks for sharing your photo. I like your subject. While we sometimes have no control of a situation we are trying to capture, the door and door knob in the background are disturbing to me (my problem of course); however, several different angles (if possible without making the musicians nervous) may have mitigated that issue. Did you handhold your camera...I sense you had blur and you decided to handle it with soft focus or something? Just a question. I have mixed feelings about soft focus. Another thing, is that powerful shots of musicians include them watching each other and thereby connected...I realize that that may not have been possible as she appears to be reading or remembering lyrics and he is just trying to play along for the first time. That's all for now. Thanks again.

Haha you got an eye for it for sure. This was his first time playing with her so there definitely was no connection between them like your saying, which is unfortunate and I think she was reading lyrics haha.

Unfortunately with the layout of the building and the way people were seated I had no way to get to a much better angle.

I guess I was just trying to capture the fact that an Older man wanted to play with the Young girl. I also wanted to to kind feel like she's playing though him perhaps. granted with the way you picked it apart it did its job in telling a story =)

I shot it hand held (broke my tripod and dont have the cash to replace it just now) in a dimly lit room with a lot of light outside. So the fact thats its a soft focus was intentional because I couldn't get it as sharp as I would have liked.

Oh well you win some you lose some. I still think it's a decent photo =)
