Default why so grainey?

shot this the other night of my daughter (one week old!) while my wife was holding her. The only light was a small lamp behind her and light coming from the other room...no tripod, no set up, just got here while she was being burped. Anyways, Im sure there is a simple explination as to why it is so grainy...I just dont know what it is. Thanks again for all your help.

Hey there Jonny. Need to know the EXIF data really for the answer but my guess would be a high (too high ISO setting).

I'd guess auto mode and it chose the hi or top ISO setting to compensate for the low light.
No EXIF data so i cant be sure but thats my guess.

Just looked at the camera and pretty sure it was set like this...

iso 100

not sure how it would get that noisy on 100?!
do you have the original you can post with EXIF data still there?
What camera and lens were you using?

I'd have thought it was maxed out ISO too.

I've took multitudes of shots that came out this same way in low light, where I had to use a fast shutter, and no flash.

You don't say what camera (unless I missed it). I don't have a dSLR myself and a photo similar to yours with that amount of light would probably be grainy without flash using my camera. I would expect a much better quality with a dSLR, but with my Fuji S5700, I think it would turn out the same way.

I was able to see the exif data by clicking on the attachment, then right clicking on the pic ... the ISO is up to 1600 which would explain the graininess

Camera Make: Canon
Camera Model: Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL
Image Date: 2008:01:06 08:39:26
Flash Used: No
Focal Length: 112.0mm
CCD Width: 2.51mm
Exposure Time: 0.033 s (1/30)
Aperture: f/6.3
ISO equiv: 1600
White Balance: Manual
Exposure Mode: Manual
