Default Disastrous

I took this in Septemberish last year. My first "planned" model shoot.
Please Critique...
I've never really noticed this, but a lot of my shots are ISO 1600 when I've always set them as 200-400 :S
Perhaps I set it on Auto for a while

Jazbagz,

On your monitor, there may have been better separation between model and background. Here it's close, almost blending into each other.

Have you looked at this flipped, so she's looking left?

I agree with jiminy... while I love the "attitude" and "feel" of the shot, especially in your model's legs and the sides of her arms the light seems to get lost and they blend in with the background. Otherwise it's a very fashionable shot. =)

What is the reason for flipping a photo horizontally? I've seen this suggestion more than once and I don't really get it.

Powjana,

i'm no expert at this but I think it has to do with reading from left to right. When you look at a picture, your eyes will start on the left of the frame and end on the right side. You'd want to have something on the right side to keep your eyes wandering off the frame and to keep them in the picture.
If someone feels I'm off track please correct!

catleclerc,

Yes. Not everything, all the time, but it is the one to try first. Also, we tend to look and follow the model's (clock face, vehicle direction of motion, center of a flower) gaze, to see what she's looking at. So, in from the left, over to model (etc.), back to left, and so on. Moving model over, still looking right, would mean in-over-out of picture.

I think JC was right about the flip. Duplicated the layer, and converted to screen mode to try and highlight her more from the background. Not sure I like the outcome thou.

Excellent! I knew there was something in flipping it, since usually whenever I flip something it gives me a completely different feeling to the photo, but I guessed that was more because I saw the photograph before flipping.

I think it was a little underexposed in the first place so that didn't help the definition.

Thanks you guys!
