Default Portrait at night

I haven't really spent any time yet figuring out how to make a flash work, but these seemed to turn out ok. Yes? No? Technically is there something I should do? And composition-wise does it grab you?

I'm not too hot with my flash yet either so won't comment on that and just wait for some others! The comp. however does feel rushed and would have been nicer if she had turned to look at you/camera.

miasmommy,

. . . and in portrait orientation to include whole figure, same pose and placed on right of composition.

in my oppinion the dark brown background does nothing but take away from her lovely purple fairy costume. Children are happy, colorful and bright and I just think the background takes away from the pic. Composition- maybe if you had taken some pics on continuous mode you could have gotten a better candid expression. some of my favs are candid shots of all aged people not looking into the camera. Have a great day.

while i enjoy her body language and do not mind the flash, the photo does not have any context. as well, if the background (however bleak/boring) had some more light it wouldn't seem so severe. i don't mind that moment, though.
