Default trial by ... water?

what a great new year...

first digital camera, first group of pictures, first post to what looks like a great forum.

now then... I have done a lot of landscape photos of open terrain, and I thought with my first digital, I'd like to explore the world of movement. This is a photo I took midafternoon at one of the various parks along the river. Of the 40 or so pictures taken, this is the one that stood out as a "keeper." The sunlight with passing clouds offered some interesting light/dark shots, and this is one of the few 'lighted' photos I ended up with. I imported the photo to PS7 and sharpened it one level to bring out the ripples in the water.

I don't have a lot of experience in taking photos of water, and I'm curious to hear some input that you all might be able to provide.

The camera I'm using is an Olympus SP-550 UZ. I tried playing with shutter speed a little bit, but don't know enough about my camera yet to know if it actually changed anything.

*** also, any tips on keeping image scaled down in size without sacrificing image quality? original picture size was something like 42 inches wide!!! and when i brought it down in size i lost almost all of my resolution.***

I just put my pictures on my Flickr account at their full size and that way I'm not actually sacrificing any quality when I post smaller versions. Of course, your original size is only available with a paid account and you have upload limits otherwise, but it's still a darn good option so that you aren't sacrificing quality.
