Pretty! My only thought is the one in the background is a little distracting. It might look better if it was in focus also, or if it wasn't there at all.

Unfortunately it looks a little more like two contestants for attention than a pair. Consider trying the pair a lot nearer together and the focus balanced between the two, but biased a bit towards the nearest subject.

while a single flower would work well, you'd be abandoning your concept. I like to stick with a concept as long as I can and try to find ways to make it work

By all means, take a shot of the flower on it's own, but I wouldn't give up on this just yet.

Slanting both stems toward each other, as if in a vase together, would help the image. Adding a dark gradient to upper left could dim blurred carnation, leaving it as less of a subject (yet still part of the image), and excusing the blur somewhat. It would simulate spotlighting.
