I think the positioning of the flower is good. It is dramatic and makes use of the shape of the petals to give a sense of depth.

The area I think is lacking is lighting. The flower looks underexposed and that problem is exacerbated by the distracting patches of bright light in the background.

The solution (if you accept my diagnosis )? Either come back to that flower at a different time of day to get better light, find a similar flower in a better position or find some way of introducing artificial light (eg. flash... almost certainly diffused in some way to prevent the effect being too harsh).

I like the angle and tight crop. I agree that the lighting is flat. I think it could use just a bit more dof and crisper center.
