Default First attempt at close up picture of a flower

Flower

Happy New Year - I took this about 12 months ago and it was my first and only attempt at close up photography. I was unsure if this works or not?

These kinds of flowers present all sorts of interesting possibilities. I like to photograph them from the top, and just go completely abstract with it.

Technically, the exposure and sharpness are spot on. Good saturation as well, but it just doesn't pop to me. Some of it may be the composition, it's very static and centralized. Putting it somewhere else in the frame (or cropping one side more tightly) might make for a dynamic photo.

You can always undo a crop if you don't like it. Don't be afraid to cut out parts of the flower or do something crazy. Heck, turn it dark blue if you want, you might like it!

stuali62,

If you plan to cut off a bloom, it may look less cutoff in a diagonal composition.

stuali62,
I don't know what editing program you have, but in order to use JC's tip, you may need to rotate the image a bit. It should work wonders.

JC,
Thanks for the tip. I have several flower shots that I've been afraid to crop for fear of ruining composition. That "diagonal" tip may help salvage some of last summers' shots.
