Default First post for critque!

This is a picture I took a few weeks ago of my son. Can you tell me what you think of it and how I could have shot it better please!

Thank you in advance for any input!

it is a nice photo

One question popped up in my mind ~ What is he looking at ?

maybe you could include what he is looking at next time or take the photo when he is looking at the camera

I know kids are really hard to take pictures of my teens are always putting there hands up or looking the wrong way when I click the button

It is really hard to get him to look at the camera these days. He is quite stubborn about it in fact! But I see what you are saying and thank you for your input.

The very first thing I would do is crop the whole top third off, it adds nothing to the image. As a matter of fact it pulls the eye away from the toddler. The other thing I would do for next time would be to get down even lower. To shoot a toddler you get your best shots kneeling or laying on the ground. I do like the look of concentration you captured and I am not distracted by not seeing what he sees because it is him that I am looking at.

Nicely exposed, sharp, good colors, angle of the bench leads you eye into the photo. Welcome to the group.

I like the background in this photo but could do without the bench. He would be better positioned under the trees in the background. I do like the shot though.

Kaeli, Welcome

Sometimes the photo I like has a list of "Don'ts" that are overcome by the total look, the unspoken something that shines through the guidelines for "perfection." This is one of those. When I can't, in my own view, make it better by changing any part, I have to like it. All of it together gives a "sense of place."

With some practice, and until he catches on, you can focus and get settings on your son when he's still, then lower your camera (finger still on shutter release) to ask him a question or point out something in the direction you want him to look, then raise and shoot, fluid motion, good shot. Works for a day or two.

I think he's going to try and steal the bench. Keeping a look-out, y'know?

I think he is a bit over exposed but a bit of adjusting it would be fine. I really like this shot and wouldn't crop any of it. I do think with kids getting down at their angle gives them more prominence in shots where there are other objects in the shot. Shooting down seems to minimize them.
Overall a great shot for you to look back on. Keep shooting and welcome to the boards.
