Default Orchid with DOF

Hi all,
I took this photo of an orchid in our house. I am interested in getting started in macro but don't have a macro lens.

This was shot 2.0 Sec, f5.6, 80 mm, Nikon D80 with an 18-135 mm lens. Let me know what I can do to improve. Thanks a lot.

I uploaded this from FLICKR as a medium size file, but it still seems to come through too small to me. If you know what I might be doing wrong let me know that too.

I sure am needy
Jim

jsklinger,

Remember that anything in front of your subject, even OOF, is generally a distraction. Try shooting from an angle with nothing obstructing your line of sight, such as these buds in your photo. Sharpness seems good, good lighting. I use sunlight 95% of my shots, f/2.8, ISO 100, 6mm equivalent (Fuji S3100), and anywhere from 1/1000 to 1/125 second.

For really good practice before you put a lot of money into a new lens, consider this:

Since these were taken, I've been able to get even closer Macros, and if you want to gain experience and some good photos, let me know and I'll add information.

Jiminy,
Thanks for that info about the out of focus in front of the subject. I couldn't decide if I liked it or not.

I appreciate it, thanks!
Jim

jsklinger,

Here's the best magnification so far:

Default Orchid with DOF

You have done quite a good job with your attempt at Macro Red is SUCH a difficult color to get right too so to combine DOF of a red flower with very blurred red blossoms (the near and far flowers on the stalk) is creating quite a visual mess. You really need to isolate one of the flowers by changing your angle slightly to allow a space between it and the rest.
As you do not have a macros lens (nor do i!) I presume you zoomed in from a little distance away?
I have found it is far cheaper to buy a "point and shoot" camera to use for my macro shots than it is to by a dedicated lens. Macro with my Panasonic FZ7 is pretty darn good!
I like the dark background you have used for your shot, it sets off the orchid well.

As far as the size, just direct link the photo from Flickr, that way it'll be clickable.
