Default Silhoutte

Hi everyone,

I'm new here... treated myself to a D80 a few months back, am loving it and am trying to learn as much as I can!

I took this photo while on holiday

DSC_0066-2

that i quite like - but would appreciate your comments. is there anything else i could have done taking the picture better in the first place?

i wasn't sure if i should try making it straight black and white afterwards? or fiddling the contrast to make it feel flatter? or less flat?? should i crop it more?

what do you think? thanks!

james_c, Welcome

Clever and fairly well shot, only offputting area is extra glare in upper right. But idea works well, even with a bit of crop all round, to get a better ratio, subject to background. This is warmer than b/w would be, personal taste would affect my choice to stay in color.

To my eye there is too much black space around the edges. For this picture I would suggest cropping some of it to bring the focus more toward the people instead of the dark wall. Some slight tweaking with levels and curves might reduce the glare a bit.

The photograph already has a kind of sepia tone to it, so I don't think a black and white version would be all that different or add much to it.

Hi!

thanks for your feedback! It's really appreciated.

I've done a little more fiddling following your advice:

DSC_0066-2-2

I think I'll need to learn a bit more about tweaking the tone curve... i've tried to reduce the glare , but now the background behind the window comes through more now, and the two figures have lost a bit of their depth...

The cropping definitely worked though! Thanks very much once again.

I like that alot better. It focuses more on the people in the window rather than the shadow around them. The glare is better and seeing the background through the window helps add depth to the picture. The people are now standing in front of a window instead of a glaring light, but the background is still just the background. Plus, although it is a fairly symmetrical composition, the people break-up the symmetry of the window frame pattern.
