Default last one for today...rock texture

Sorry to flood the board here with all my posts today, just killing time while my wife starts going into labor! This one was also taken at Zion National park this summer.

You could always look for some other people's shots and comment on those. You will probably learn more by thinking about what you can constructively say about other people's shots than by waiting to hear what they say about your own.

Meanwhile, I hope the birth works out smoothly - best wishes to your wife on behalf of everyone on the board.

jonny4now,

Drop the mouse, go hold a hand. Unless this is like your fourth or fifth birth. Nah, still, go to the most important photo site.

And think about focus later when you come back to see and comment on others' photos. Most of those you've shown are affected by something in your shooting style or your camera's AutoFocus or who knows what.

Is there a reason this one is square? Was there something intruding on the right hand side? The diagonal strata going from lower left to upper right would be a good compositional item if it weren't cut off by the square cropping. As it is, the lines just seem to end. To show the text, next time you might want to get closer and shoot along the wall.

jimminyclickit, thanks for the heads up on the focus. Before I posted this one I over processed it in PS aparently. I was trying to soften it a bit, but now that I look back on it it is soft...can a rock be soft?

wulf, im new here and don't feel like I have the knowledge to critique anyones photography at this point...I really dont want to over step my boundries...good advice though, I will work on coming out of my shell, its the only way to learn I guess! oh, and the labor was just a spook thismorning at 4:00 am. Now we wait for the real thing. Im sure my new baby will be my new favorite subject to shoot.

Jon

Have to be honest Jonny tro me a rock is a rock is a rock. Apart from the fact that it has Jesus' face there it might make a good abstract. Now go away and have that baby! Congratulations!

jonny4now,

Better, yes. As though you could feel the roughness with your eyes. And yes, our 93Q FM has soft rock all day.

This second version is better. It has nicer colors and I can make out the textures a lot better. I think I see either some cross-bedding or an unconformity in it now. It's been a long time since my classes so I'm not as good at identifying that sort of thing as I was in my younger days. That's geology geek-speak by the way. Basically, if you are trying to show the texture of something like this, then you probably don't want to softened it as that will remove the detail that you were trying to capture.

Still, I'm wondering why it is square cropped? I would much rather see the rest of it on the right-hand side.

Edit: "Can a rock be soft?" Oh, most definately yes it can be soft.

Check out the "sticky" thread that gives a basic guide to critiquing images - that should suggest a few ways to get your toes in the water.
