Default Mighty Murphy

My parents' dog loves to run around the back yard in a total random pattern, so I thought it would be perfect practice on trying to focus on a moving subject. Out of 15 shots, I got about 3 that were decent, and this was my favorite. What do you think?

Should I have not cropped so much of the grass and background out of the shot?

I love his flowing hair/fur!

I don't mind the background cropping. Maybe leave him a little more room on the right to "run into"?

Great catch!

I think you did well! Three out of 15 is a great "keeper" ratio. Does your camera have a "follow focus" mode ? I agree with the earlier comment about leaving a little more room on the right. Looks like he could have been the artist's model for the book cover Nicole posted!

Wow, the resemblance is striking. I will need to check out that book.

One more question.. Would this have been a good opportunity to use RAW to get more detail out of his fur? I read an article on here about the advantages of using RAW, but I haven't been able to figure out how to make those modifications using the Canon software provided with the camera.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback!

ryan_vt, Welcome

In a tighter closeup portrait, a raw shot would be worth trying, getting every hair sharp as possible. This action shot is almost like sculpture from having just a little blur. Trying to pull detail out would change that.

If you take another running shot and stop the motion, raw would help detail definition, and give you more options for color and contrast.
