Default New to this!

So my husband just bought me a Canon Rebel XTI, and I am completely new to photography! I still haven't quite learned the different affects of the camera, how to make the most of a shot, etc. But I'm trying to learn!

I took these today, and I was wondering if anyone could give me insight as to how I can improve the pictures?

vms0427, Welcome

Some guidelines to start, for posting:

The 'Rules' for this Critique Forum

These are for a more thorough Critique and a fair distribution of everyone's photos, especially the "one at a time" aspect.

From these four, it might be said that picking a subject and displaying it effectively would be a good practice area for you. Composition in "Technique" below this section will help, and several items in the DPS Blog have much to say on placing a subject well in a viewfinder.

Try picking one of these for Critique, and see how much information comes your way. If that works for you, do another (sometimes it's just a good idea to let another poster in, then you post again, etc.).

vms0427,

Lest you feel unhelped or lost, you're doing exactly what you need to do: use the camera, show the photos, see what viewers think. It always gets better with practice. Read your manual as you experiment, use Auto to see what the camera would in a lighting situation, eventually you will know how to manually set exposure, speed, ISO, etc., to achieve results you want. Patience, good questions, practice, just keep these active, and soon you'll post a "Wow!" That seems to be a goal worth pursuing, and is within your grasp.

Welcome to the forum, just take lots and lots of pictures after about 1000, you will start to get the hang of it, if its a picture you really want, take a few in auto mode, then try some of your own settings, the main thing, have fun, don't feel bad if you take a bad one, my delete button gets a real work out.
