I wish I had been able to get my hands a D50 at 8..or 18 even! Really great shot and good for you Carl to have found something that you and your son can share like photography.

If you are shooting in the dark, you need that kind of exposure time or longer. I think one of Carl's pictures had a 4 minute exposure time (and looked wonderful). I experimented a bit the other day and had fun; I was also reminded how even a minute long exposure is enough that the stars become short lines instead of dots.

If its a cloudy day then the movement of clouds will give a very surreal feel to the scene. On the side, does your kid understand these things? Did you teach him all the concepts and he decided that he needed 2+ mins of exposure at f8 with ISO200?
