Default Ice Storm in Oklahoma

While documenting damage around the house for insurance purposes after an ice storm, I happened to see what I thought was an interesting shot through fallen limbs and brush. Really just a shapshot, but perhaps interesting. I'm still trying to learn this digital SLR stuff; I'm from the old school -- film SLR from the 70s. Go easy on me; this is my first post.

Hard to tell the cause but it's mostly blurry. Did you use a tripod? Were you shivering like I would be? I'm just south of you and the Red River seems to slow everything down before it gets to us.

I've been through a few ice storms in other areas and can't imagine having a camera and not being able to find a shot. If I were in your shoes and had an SLR I'd be broke from buying film.

This would be good if there was something in there to focus on. Just having a bunch of things in various levels of focus is not enough. I think there is potential here. There are red berries or buds add color. The clouded lighting helps avoid wash-out in brighter areas of the ice, but catching a brighter spot in the clouds could provide more light and interest. Shots like this are best with a fairly limited depth of focus, and one thing to focus on. The rest is just framing.

Looks like your camera focused on what looks like a 2x4 stud in the middle of the picture. Had your lens been stopped down some more, the whole image would have been more in focus and blended into what would have looked like a piece of cracked glass or something. I've seen many of these images (with my eyes) growing up in the northeastern U.S. I agree with Franken above, I would too have been shivering to capture the shot, so the wide open lens and narrow depth of field would have been my dilema too. Good luck..
