Default Cape Lookout Lighthouse

I'm a newbie to your forum. I am thinking I'm ready to advance my skills and move to a DSLR (is that what it's called?).

This is one of my favorite pics taken June between 2 and 4 pm on the coast of North Carolina:

I stood in it's shadow and took this pic with the sun shining at the top.

This was taken with my old trusty point-n-shoot Fuji Finepix A345.

This is a very nice solar glow. Do you remember the settings you used? My point-n-shoot has a Simple mode with a Backlit option I usually use for these.

I think I used the "landscape" mode. It is pretty limiting w/ the settings and changing them doesn't seem to make much of a difference, hence my ideas to moving toward an SLR.

Thanks for the comment.

Even with your P&S you should be able to lower your camera from the sun and get your exposure, hold your shutter release half way and raise the camera back up to the sun and take your picture. This should make the light house brighter and the sun as well and hopefully not blow out the sky. Good luck and nice try.

Nice angle, composition. This inspires me. I may drive down to Southport today and get some shots of the Fort Caswell light.
