Jetty

Hi

Took this shot at the weekend whilst on Lake Windermere

Shot in RAW, Early morning, Long Exposure to get lake to look milky converted to B/W and trim to portrait

Quite like the shot but think there is a lot of noise in it

Would welcome your comments please on how i could have imporved

Thanks

Great image. I love what effect long exposure has on water. I plan to do some of this kind of stuff when my ND400 filter arrives. 3 minutes exposures, yay!
Anyway, there's two things that throw me off a little.
First, the very subtle angle of the bridge is a bit strange. As a rule for me, I either want to make my angles obvious, to show I did so with intention, or I try to make it absolutely straight.

Secondly, I might have gotten a little bit closer to the bridge cut out the small piece of the ground on the left side, so I could still keep the "danger - deep water." I think cropping it would take too much out on this image, but you could certainly try and see.

Great work overall though!

ok - love the shot and its moody nature so don't feel the noise is such a big problem here as it almost makes it feel nostalgic. First thing i notice and love however in amongst all the beautiful landscape is the text on the bridge. Is this what you want? A beautiful landscape or a slightly comedic focus on the text? If the former - crop it. If the latter however i'd also suggest crop it! lol

To explain why i say this:

Beauty

left and right of the bridge in the water i don't feel add much to the picture focus wise: although the waters texture is lovely it doesn't draw your eye currently. Therefore i'd crop some of the bottom and make this a longer thinner panoramic shot drawing your eye more to the landscape in the background with the misty water and the jetty as the forground interest (maybe starting at the fatter side beams on it) but without having to worry about the words.

Text
The bold pronounced "Danger - Deep water" is wonderful... I'd accentuate what it is directed at (the danger of falling off the jetty) by making this a portrait photo rather than a landscape angled one. I'd crop off left and right of the jetty centering it and using it to draw the eye down to the water at its end that is the danger spot (rather than using the sides as the danger spot) as the first and largest forground item to confront you will now be the text. This would make for a strong powerful image...

So your lovely setting and interesting use of b/w to remove any colour destractions and add a moody sense to the picture are brilliant. I am only suggesting a crop to pick a specific place of interest for the eye to naturally rest as i feel this picture currently incorporates two ok but neither is as strong as it could be. Your choice of course entirely.

Yeah - i'd say I agree with the above, and maybe, bump out that stump in the water on the right? I think it takes my eye a little too much... the "danger - deep water" sign, did you enhance it at all?.. It looks very white... sort of jumps out at me...

i definately prefer the first of your crops. i feel that the jetty some how lacks presence against the large sky in the 2nd. But yer... 1st is strong

Took the liberty - as always just say and I'll delete although I've mede it private ojn flickr.

windermere

Rotated slightly to make the jetty level
cropped so the jetty step and post sit at the right upper and lower 1/3 points.

played with levels then added a vignette as it looked sort of 50s-ish.

I like the orginal shot. I like how it tells a story inside the frame.

Nice job with the long exposure.
