Default Day 2 with my new xti Rebel

Snowfall2

I had a question on this picture, on the larger wallpaper size, you can see our barn in the background on the small you cant

But my question is on the larger size there is 2 red dots . . like that in the middle of one of the snow flakes.???? I took the picture outside and not near any windows or anything reflective...I dont think you can see it in the smaller pic. I just wondered what that might be.

Anyway, I am loving this camera, wish I was intelligent enough to use it. I told the hubby that it needs someone smarter than me to use it lol...But I'll keep plugging away

Buffy, Welcome

Just imagine how brilliant you'll feel when you have all the experience and knowledge required to make your Rebel sing! It only takes a little patience and lots of practice.

As size decreases, so does detail and light areas of information in a photo. So your barn (in upper left, hayloft over door, facing left?) is barely discernable here. Something to consider when shooting, size of print and exposure value.

If the red dot was very tiny, I'd say a radical pixel. But these look more like refraction, like the rainbow in a water sprinkler in bright Sun. Flash and snow crystals can give various colors. Not a problem to remove if you really don't want it.

How much snow have you gotten? Central New York has between 10-20 inches.

You are intelligent enough to handle your camera I love the snows in the shot. The red dot you are taking about (though I didnt find it) probably a tiny snow on your lens which acts as prisom and change the colour of the flash reflection.
As of critique for the shot, if its still snowing in your part of world.. (i live in a part of world where tempareture never goes below 12C) try to fous on the snow and blur everything using shallow DOF.

Jiminy,
LOL, no idea how you could see that barn, that but yes that is right!
Thanks for the advice, i'll keep practicing and I may even try to get rid of those dots, even though this was just a practice shot on the spur of the moment, the snowflakes were so huge I just had to see what it looked like in a shot, lol...we had 4 inches of snow here in Ohio then the rains started, now we are back to freezing rain and snow. treacherous, but still not as bad as you all or the folks out in OK

Thanks again!
Buffy

I tried saving the picture and blowing it up and still can't see the barn.

Very cool snowflake shot though. I really like the range of Depth of Field produced.

I'm kinda torn regarding the picture being taken at night. It's cool because of the snowflakes and the dark background helps to make the snowflakes more visible. But I'm curious how it would look during the day, maybe like early morning with some natural light visible. I'm sure this would also help in showing the barn as well.

Since I don't get any snow where I live, you have inspired me to try something similar with rain.

Default Welcome

Wow - looking at your picture up there i am impressed with the way your not afraid to just get started. Interesting to see your use of the fence line too - line'd up very specifically from bottom left at an angle enough to not be an inability to hold the camera straigh but deliberate and the fence posts themselves almost at right angles! Good job! once you learn to use the camera (tool) you'll be flying because you seem to already being deliberate in how you angle it whether you know it or not! I'm impressed. The snow looks wonderful on the black background too.

I agree with min_is_3 - i'd love to see this shot at dawn with the subtleties of the delicate early light.

And i can make out the barn just i think - typical front pointing Apex about a third of the way into the shot from the left (your already starting to use the rule of thirds too! impressed! What with that and the raised wood veranda at two of the key points of interest almost (if only the barn showed better in the dark small shot...)! if you don't know what i'm on about search the dps blog for rule of thirds and they'll have a wealth of explanations!)

Anyhow! good job... I love the atmosphere you captured

Wow,
Remind me to put you all on my "when I need encouragement list"!!

Thanks for that I appreciate it, gives me motivation to learn more!

I'll try the early morning shot and post it so that you can see the barn more clearly lol....It would be nice to capture it with a light snowfall too, but that might be icing on the cake lol..

(you got it Ed! I am amazed you can see it, I barely make it out in the enlargement lol)..

Thanks guys,
Buffy

I'm not sure how they're seeing it as-is (my monitor isn't the best ), but if you take the picture and jack up the brightness, you can bring it out nice and clear. If you tweak levels just right, (and throw in a slight blur to reduce artifacts in this case) you can actually have the barn (and the bushes in between) show up and the image still look decent

That's also something to keep in mind when you think you've hidden or lost details in the shadows. A person's face, for example

edit: now that I know where it is, I can actually see the doors in the original :P
