Hi All,

Caught my pup having a snooze on the back porch the other day. Im trying to really pay attention to the lighting in my pics, so any comments would be great.

Cheers

I love this My only critique would be that the dark side of the face is just a little too dark (but that could just be my monitor). And the round shadow that's coming towards his head looks weird. But it's a great pic and lovely use of light.

Looks like your dog is still listening even though he/she is sleeping. Great picture though.

Thnaks for the feedback guys.

The round shadow still bothers me too. I actually cropped out my dogs water bowl that made it's way into the shot. It is bright blue and distracts from the subject. Maybe there is a way to PS the shadow out, but Im not clever enought to that yet

A lesson i learnt regarding this is it is easier to look and remove the obtruding things imediately before taking the photos then haveing to digitally remove them after which is harder! hmmmm oh well - learning curve. Cute dog. Odd someone said the shadow on face is to dark cos i thought the white on the top of fur was too white... hmm maybe a gentle level of ffill in flash would aid detail in the shadow side but not remove effects of the light and shadow entirely?

Aside from the two things that Kathryn mentioned (weird round shadow, and right side of face being a little dark) I think you did a really good job of capturing the light. I like how the dog is composed in the shot with a nice close up of his face rather than his entire body. It makes me stay focused on his eyes and how peaceful he looks.

I also happen to really like your floor. I think this photo would not have as much impact if he was laying down on tile floor or concrete or a nyloneum (spelling?) kitchen floor. I like the aged look to it with the scratches and different variations of the brown color which matches the colors of your dog around the eyes. Kinda gives it a classic feel to it if you know what I mean.

Very nice shot, I like the side lighting a lot.

In a situation like this, a large piece of white card held on the opposite side of a subjects face will reflect enough light to even out the shadow a little... though it's rare to have the chance to set a shot up as you'd like with dogs.

Thanks for all the comments guys....there is some good advice in your comments.

This was a spur of the moment photo. I wish i had removed the bowl so there was no nasty shadow but...hey, the shot would not have happened.
