Default Little Craps

Today turned out to be macro day. I really had to stop the lens down to get good DOF, I think I finally got it (25 shots later).
Little Craps
Nikon D300
Exposure: 0.5 sec (1/2)
Aperture: f/54
Focal Length: 60 mm
ISO Speed: 200
Exposure Bias: -1/2 EV
Flash: Flash fired

FYI your ISO speed is showing... twice. Unfortunately your Shutter speed isn't.

Something's not quite there. The DOF seems okay but I'm not sure where the focus should be. The pit in the upper-left box-car, and the small duce seem to be most in focus.

One thing I notice is what appears to be dust on the table(?) surface and possibly on the subjects. The scratches on the larger die seem distracting. This is just a wild shot, but maybe a light application of wax could tone these features down without totally denying the character of the objects.

I like the concept and I think it plays on the diagonals well.

Good job on the exposure, I'm a big fan of the darkened shots.

The only crit I have is that the dice are dirty.....not conducive towards a good product shot.

Dirty dice, it's called patina. They and some other ivory pieces have been in the family for about 70 years. It would be like washing memories away to clean them.

Egads! Now I feel *really* qualified after missing 'Exposure = ShutterSpeed'. {hangs head in own scotch glass}

My biggest thing is the specs on the black surface seem to match the specks on the die. I don't think you can 'wash away' patina even on period pieces but then again, I'm not a collector. A dusting with a can of air or something should help. The white speckles don't seem to be a natural part of patina, even on dice.

You got me on the white speckles, I could do good by some house cleaning. Thanks for the critique.

I like the composition and the color on this photograph alot. I thought these were old dice and that was a part of the photograph. I would nver have seen the specs, but now that I do they can be distracting. the DOF I think is right on in this. good macro in my opinion
