Hello, I've got this backlit shot of an orchid my dad is growing. I'm unsure about the lighting (too harsh?), but I welcome any critiques you may have. I shot this with the only camera I currently have: a Canon S3IS. I had macro focus engaged and shot hand held (f/2.7, 1/800). All of the light comes from a window behind the flower. Thanks.

It is on the harsh side. I've taken many similar shots disappointed that the result didn't match what I thought I saw. Checking the histogram confirms that the petal edges are blown out, and the surrounding dark areas have too little light. I see you have one next to it on your Flickr set that came out well. It seems to be at a less direct angle against the sun. I think shots like this fair better as the light is less direct, and is able to balance the background better.

I like the shot but I think you need a bit more light on the front of the flower to show the detail near the bottom of the flower. Well done.
