Default Winter Wetland

OK, I took this yesterday evening, about an hour before sunset. I was much happier with the idea of the photograph than I am with the actual result, but I'm not sure what I don't like about it. It just seems like the light was much warmer in real life than it's coming across in this shot (even though it was only 25 degrees!). And I'm not sure if there's too much sky.

Any ideas?

The warmth of the light is visible on the foreground and really created a nice effect. Am not really sure if there is too much of the sky or simply not much happening up there. The foreground creates a strong image for me, but as I look up the image, I somehow loose the intensity of the emotion.

I'm thinking there is a little too much sky. Cropping out some of the cooler blue makes the shot appear a tad warmer as well as raising the horizon line so it is less in the middle of the picture.
Bravo for going out in the cold! Me, I've decided to try more macro shots.

Holy Hell... thats ICE, on a creek!!! man i sooo want to see that one day.... but yeh, if u can, get the horizon out of the middle of your photo, try cropping a bit of sky out... but not too much, because the clouds give it a nice, semi-symetrical effect, running with the river

I wonder what would it look like with even more sky above, and the horizon at the 1/3 of the frame, or at least at the golden cut... I think the deep blue color of additional sky would contrast the vivid warm colors below and make the ground look more intriguing. Empty sky is fine for this peaceful and silent scene.

You know, I just noticed something. Is that a mail box on the left side of the river? I didn't know fish could read! Whatever it is, it looks out of place. Do you have mail carriers delivering in canoes?

LOL it's a nesting box for ducks There are several of them on this man-made, federally protected wetland. There are also a few platforms floating out in the main body of water for ducks and geese to nest on and for fish, frogs, and turtles to hang out under when the weather is hot.

The entire thing is on private property that belongs to a good friend of mine, so I have unrestricted access.
