What was the look that you were going for in this photograph? Without knowing what sort of end result was intended, much of my critique may be irrelevant.

The pose looks slightly awkward and I agree about the color.

I think you're relying on the flash too much. You need more light, and from different directions.

i think the colours are a bit dull and you've cut of her forehead. I think because of that it makes the image look a bit squished.

Thanks, thought the colours were nice, but maybe you are right. Should have taken the photo in portrait not landscape. This was just a test shot, testing the flash with white balance etc. I don't have lightning yet, so have to make use of only the flash.

Thanks for the comments and criteria.

morfasie,

This portrait is a little better than your earlier post of her. The skin is not too light, highlights are good. Other than the pose, which causes the right eye to look odd, it is a step in a good direction.

Have you tried using large mirrors to reflect your flash from several other directions? Worth an experiment, to get an idea of the difference it makes. More light will give life to colors

I may be in the minority here, but I quite like how the subject is framed. I agree with what others have said, and in my case I'm most distracted by the lighting, and then the pose..

I think the lighting is part of your problem. If you are relying on the built in camera flash, there are things you can do to soften it. Try placing a thin piece of tissue paper over it to diffuse the light a bit, or cut a hole in a pingpong ball and place it over the light. There is also this thread. As for reflectors, Jim's idea of mirrors to reflect some light is a good one or you can buy one of those silver or gold car windshield protectors (the kind you put in your car to reflect the light back out) to use as a reflector. The gold might give a warmer look to her face which is rather blue. A desk lamp with a piece of sheer fabric over it to diffuse light can be placed at different positions to add light. It might take you some trial and error to change positions of lights etc. to come up with something you like.
