Lightbulb Check Mate

Check Mate

Revisted the chess board I think I should have removed the pawn in the front but if I did that woudln't be a check mate anymore.

BTW does anyone play chess here?

Nice work on lighting the board and pieces. Can you share your technique with us? I agree with your thought about the pawn as it blends into the queen. I like the varied effect the finish of the piece (frosted vs. clear) has on the light.

I used a tall stack of DVD boxes to raise the chess board above the table. Then I used some black velvet back drop and placed it on a table and had another stack of dvds that help it up and pinned it down so everything was black. I then used a single 40 watt bulb in a lamp that was about 12 inches away from the board with 4 or 5 sheets of tracing paper tapped over the light to diffuse the light.

I like it. I am not sure if moving a little to the side would help show the pawn more or not.

btw- yes I play , but I'm not very good.

I wanted to use a diffrent angle but that was the only angle I could get with out showing the DVD cases I need to find a better way to suspend things in the air. I probably just need to buy some dowels at home depot and make little arms to hold lights and objects. I also need some fishing line to suspend other things in the air.

So many little things to get so little time to remember it all.

now that I look at it more closely I should have put a horse between the white queen and king to back up the queen that is attacking haveing the horse protect the queen still and the frosted horse could have an intresting effect seen though the transparent horse.

Another angle might be better as it is hard to see the pawn in front of the bishop. I didn't see it all first and wondered why the frosted knight couldn't just take the bishop.

I know what you mean about trying to make sure nothing shows. I use books instead of dvds. (there stronger) My chessboard is glass/frosted glass so I have to make sure to have something under it that wont be distracting.
You may want to look into those old clothes drying stands they have plenty of arms and it would be easy to attach lights and things to them, or maybe a child's mobile, (not sure of the strength of it though.)
