Early morning shot with camera in the "pattern" metering mode was probably influenced by the sky, causing underexposure of 'under-illuminated' faces of the monument. Nice subject. You may want to change your positin next time so as to not have the tallest part of the monument quite so centered.

I like the bright sky that that you captured and the shadows on the building are captured well. Although, the brightness of the sky and the darkness of the foreground is the only thing holding this picture back. It almost looks like the sky was added in during post processing.
Clockdoc is correct. Having the brick in the middle almost cuts the picture in half. Maybe a lower angle following the rule of thirds may help in the composition. The low angle would bring out the height of the thing in the middle (is that a chimney?).

As far as being darker on flickr - what color space are you using? I've heard rumors that people using Adobe RGB notice this effect, I use sRGB and I don't...

Thanks for the advice, I edited the sky in it's own curves layer which is why it looks somewhat fake, but I think I might have just made the contrast too high.
I also agree that the obelisk is too centered. I was using sRGB IEC61966-2.1, but have switched it, and am going to test the new setting. Thanks for all your help. Here is another picture from the same area...
