Hi and welcome to the group. Cute kid shots to remember the day. Both shots are a bit underexposed so we can't really appreciate the beauty of the colorful birds. I am guessing your camera meter was influenced by the daylight in the background causing the underexposure. Do you have any photo software to lighten them up?

I think you will find, being new to the group, that a single photo is preferred over multiple posts in a thread. I look forward to seeing more of your work. Happy to help where I can.

clockdoc,
Thanks for your reply I am fairly new to digital photography and I am still learning I didn't care much for the lack of control that the HP point and shoot camera offered, so I bought a D-100 from a friend of mine (the price was right) but it is a different world compared to my trusty old Cannon 35mm.
I appreciate any advise that anyone has to offer, and I will only post one pic from now on.

what a great time you and your kids must have had that day.....doc is right....your camera metered the light from the background and underexposed your subjects.....at first blush, you might think that your point and shoot lacks control......but if you think about the shot as a whole and angle yourself for a less light contrasted frame, you can work around this one aspect of metering.....

since you are familiar with your old 35mm, break out the manual to your p & s and see what all you can do......most point and shoots have a lot of creative options that, if explored, can lead to amazing images.....

thanks for sharing

Thanx peeper I'll do that. Do you think if I would have used the flash it would have helped make up for the background light.

We had a great time at the Columbus zoo. If your ever in Columbus Ohio I recommend going.
