Would love any feedback on this shot...the original is a full body shot (so i can always recrop if necessary) and is taken in color..right now i think the background is distracting so I would love any ideas to make it look better

seems a bit out of focus and noisy...I think as far as the background goes a selection of the guy and a gaussian blur to the background could bring him out a bit more. I think when you have him selected you should adjust levels a bit by bringing the highlights in a bit and the mids up a bit...he is a bit dark all over and not alot of detail in the clothing. Do you have PS or any editing program?

It is a difficult background for the subject: dark skin, dark clothes and dark guitar against a background that is very light. You probably either need to take shots like this with a darker background (so you can expose the subject better without blowing out the background) or get a lot more light on the subject.

As pinball said blur the background, lower the highlights and push the midtones. Decomposed with LAB in GIMP and just kept the L. Sharpened the foreground and blurred the background again

From DPS

As usual I've taken liberties. If you want it deleted just PM me. I've left another couple of versions on Picassa web for you to check out.

I find it looks more realistic when you use a lens blur on the background instead of gaussian, but thats just my opinion.
