Default Rally Pics: Which Mood is Best?

Hi Folks:

Here playing with some photos from a rally a while back. The same shot, two different moods, yet not so different.

EXIF: Nikon D70, ISO 200, 70mm (with 18-70mm), 1/250, f/8.0, handheld

This is the softer version -- different mood:

This is the grittier version, although not that gritty, but different in mood:

Which one strikes you as the best approach? Feedback always appreciated.

Best,

Scampi

I can see the 1st a bit softer but such a tiny bit I would not have known if you hadn't said something....I thinks its just soft enough to look like its out of perfect focus...
I like the second better of the two.

Scampi,

If by "gritty," you mean "over-sharpened," then the second one has more clear edges to it.

What isn't at all clear is, "best approach" to what? To show what? To whom? What is your position on the issue?
