Default eerie glow

Ok - here's my photo. I think what i want to learn is how to improve composition but i am open to any other thoughts on improvements...

Camera: Sony DSC-H5
Exposure: 8 sec (8)
Aperture: f/8
Focal Length: 6 mm
ISO Speed: 400
Exposure Bias: 2 EV
Flash: Flash did not fire

I know that its not completely steady (i just happened to have my camera in my bag on the way home and no tripod so was balancing the camera on a railway sleeper around a flowerbed... must have looked funny to the other passers by...)

Looking forward to hear your thoughts!

Always good to carry your camera with you! I like the reflection on the water and the pavement. The lights seem a little bright to me and are almost distracting as are the 2 posts in the front. Could you take this from a different angle? Perhaps standing closer to the water and getting more reflection and less bright lights or shooting from a different angle. The 8 second exposure may have also contributed to unsteadiness.

Thankyou for your response... i guess my problem is i have a little too much love of light... But i completely agree the posts are distracting. Currently unless i see a shot right off i tend to get overwhelmed by all the possibilities of shot angles.... How do you decisively make your decisions? Practice?

I like the general look and feel of this photo...the posts are distracting me but not too bad.
Its a great site to shoot like Saralonde said is it a place you can revisit with a better plan of attack?

as far as making decisions....
one simple answer.....don't think just shoot! at first I always tell people not to think too much of all the rules thats jumbled up in their heads and so on and so forth. Its digital practically free so just start shooting and recomposing. Once you get a handle on what type of shooting you lean towards then you can analyze more and look at your shots to see where you need work.

Ed., Welcome

At first I really liked the atmosphere of the combination of lighting, the moss hanging down (or is that a willow?), and basic composition. Then I started to want more of a definite subject to dwell on, beyond the glow. So I like the quality, and would like it more with a point of interest.

I think maybe blocking a post wit ha silhouette of a person walking by or looking across the water....might make for a good shot...
