Default Critique Critique

For members recently signed on, and others who forget, the original intent of Critique My Shot is to post one photo at a time

The 'Rules' for this Critique Forum

and receive adequate comment/suggestion/praise. This gives all a chance to be seen and given consideration.

I'm 5 pages behind in viewing and have already seen 3 posts with multiple photos. Rather than display the link to how Critique works on each multiple post, I hope this will reach everyone. It really does work better following the guidelines.

Absolutely. We haven't been very heavy handed with moderating this aspect of things but please exercise some self-discipline. If you just want people to look at your shots, then there is a share your shots discussion you can post to.

When you put something in the critique forum you are expecting those who comment to invest time into examining your work, which is why we ask that you don't flood it. As Jiminy notes, it can get busy out there!

Thank you two! I'm brand new and still learning about photography.

I think you Admins and Moderators have quite a beautiful site here. You do a fine job of running it, too!

The stickies with the rules are eay to find. Plus, I love how it's a learning site and not just a gallery for the pros.

I just wanted to voice my thanks.

starrylaurie,

And it's free, which just fits my budget. Often I believe the mode of "learn what you want when you want how it best suits you" also fits my brain. I too give thanks for having a DPS at my fingertips.

And now you are a part of what makes it a great experience. It is truly what you make of it.

I have only posted a few pics on critique my shot, my pictures tend get lost pages back and then I miss out on the help to make them better. I am not sure if I am listing them right, asking the right questions, have a catchy title or numerous other reasons why no one wants to comment on them. I shouldn't say no one comments, I do get one or two posts mostly by clocdoc, which if you are going to get one response, good to have it from someone so knowledgeable.
I have started to posting on general chit chat with a specific question I want answered. I tend to get much more information and critique on them by doing it this way.

I now go to the critique section to read the other posts and learn from what others have say about the pictures posted there.

Sorry for my rant. Don't think that things need to change I have just adjusted it to fit my needs. Like Jiminy says, "It is truly what you make of it."

Marmalade,

Amen. After going through more than a hundred photo posts this morning, I'm still uncertain which of those things is most important, or if maybe all of them are. Some days you will be a star, then the next you may go straight to Page 3, commentless. It is the person who does not give up, or adapts as you describe, who gets the most from time spent here. Good thinking outside the Critique box.

It does seem some days the forum has way too many new posts to comment on them all...
I try going through the ones that no has commented on and try to give a bit of help or encouragement. Sorry marmalade for either missing your shots or overlooking them....
hopefully the new people posting 6 or so shots in a row will get the hang of it and help out by not flooding the boards.

The threads that get a comment bounce back up to the top of the list - the default sort order is by most recent posting. Sometimes I click on "replies" twice - first to sort by it and then to reverse the sort to "lowest to highest", which lets me find ones that were neglected.

Sometimes I truly have nothing to say, either because I don't see much merit in the photo (and silence is probably better than saying that unless you can compare it with other, much better shots by the same person) or because I don't see particular room for improvement. However, I have noticed that these rescued threads often attract further comments from others once they bounce back to the top of the list.

Also, as I have said several times, I am convinced that you learn more by helping others than by relying on them to critique your shots. That develops your eye, which you have with you while taking photos while the passive person who just hopes to get nice comments back is going to be stuck taking lots of pictures and probably missing some great opportunities because their "critiquing muscle" is underdeveloped.
