I think there is too much of the first one out of focus. I might crop it down some.
The second bug is crystal clear but the leaf in the foreground is very distracting. If you took these seveal years ago i would love to see what you are doing now!

I like the second one better than the first due to the colorcontrast

the second one is a lot better...i like the contrast in color...
the first one - the background is distracting - you have a black/white line cutting through the insect (preying mantis?)...you cut off the antenna too but it might have been good if you had a shallower DOF - the head/eyes clear and the rest of the body blurred more...

I like the first picture but generally you would want to have more of the body in focus. I feel like the shallow DOF works in this picture because you have the important part (head and eyes) in sharp focus.
The second photo is very nice as well nice sharp focus on the ladybug and the colors are excellent but I would crop off the bottom third and the right third of the picture to bring more emphasis on the subject.

Thanks for the comments. Both Photos were entered into a Photo Contest and the preying mantis was the one to be chose. 1 of 1500 people published world wide. (Best of college Photography Annual 2005, Pg. 92)
The Lady Bug (U.S.) is by far my favorite photo and taken for my wife as a birthday gift. Quote:
