I think both pictures suffer from the typical problem of photography in such venues; background clutter and random things sticking in from the side of the picture. What lens are you using? It is the kind of situation where a shallow DoF (wide aperture) can be very helpful.

Well at the moment I'm only using the lens fitted on my fuji S6500, these are the first few pictures I've ever taken on my SLR and I'm only on the site to leran from others, I'm still not sure how to set up everything in the right situations, so thanks for the reminder, but how do you change the aperture ? And what mode does it work best in ?

Default Prime Lens, no flash, high ISO

I don;t own an SLR but have used a couple so what I'm writing here maybe taken witha pinch of sale.

You could try taking such shots with
- Prime lens (50 mm f/1.4 or 1.8)
- Use the widest aperture possible (f/1.4 or f/1.8)
- Take ISO setting to really high (400 and above)
- Under expose by upto 1 stop, in case you still can't get a sufficiently fast shutter speed (1/100 sec should be fine for this setting)
- No flash!!

I guess these settings should work.

What say wulf?

Is that this camera? If so, it looks like one of those that bridges the gap between Point and Shoot and SLR, with lots of control available but a fixed lens.

You could still apply some of Sandeep's suggestions though, particularly experimenting with setting the aperture wide open and seeing what depth of field you get. I think the camera has an aperture priority mode that might be a good place to start with that (check the manual for details).

tight space, so so lighting, lots of clutter (as wulf said)...you see a part of someone else's guitar (where you turn those thingamigs to tune the guitar) sticking out, a dome light acting like a halo on the singer's head, cutting off a player's guitar because maybe there was some extra clutter you didn't want to include...

oh well, sometimes you just have to make do with what's handed to you...and you grabbed some nice shots...

best thing to do in my amateur opinion is DOF (as wulf suggests) and try to fill the frame with more of your subject...
