Default Mud Creek Falls

Mud Creek Falls is in Sky Valley right on the North Carolina and Georgia border. C&C welcome.

Nice motion in the water. I feel like you lost a lot of shadow detail in this exposure. Also the composition feels very cramped to me. If you have a wireless off camera flash you can try using a rear curtain flash fired onto the rocks in the back of the falls to get more detail in there or just have someone stand off to the side of the frame with a flashlight... Where in atlanta are you from? I lived in Atlanta for a while before moving down here to Cozumel.

Rex, thanks for the comment, this shrunken version doesn't look right. You can see a larger version here. I kept the shadows dark behind the falls for separation but may go back and lighten it up a little.

Thanks again

John

Fantastic! I've never done waterfall shots myself, but I plan to! Some people who do waterfall shots have a 1-2 second shutter speed, but some use 30 seconds - that would be way too long wouldn't it? I would think it would wash out the entire picture.

Love the water but would really like to see a bit more of whats around it.

That's why you use a Neutral Density filter, it let's you use a slower shutter speed to blur the water but keep the exposure in check. I really want a Singh-Ray Vari-ND.

Not much else around it to include. Unfortunately there's not a lot of water running through the falls due to the drought, this is about 1/3 of what's normally running.

Nice effect with the water. I think the background is a tad too dark as well. The rocks seem to have a lot of texture to them that are lost in the shadows. Did you expose for the water only? Maybe exposing for the background would help some?

I want to get an ND filter for shots like this. I'd love to have that silky effect in my bag of tricks too. ;-)
