Default Old Barn

Not a bad shot, but the foreground of leaves is distracting from what should be the the center of attention: the barn. Perhaps blurring the leaves or cropping them down would help.

Hi picman --

I love subjects like this -- they're photogenic in the extreme, with a great deal of potential, and your old barn is no exception.

While I don't disagree with the comment about the foreground leaves, using the foreground for framing can make for a nice effect. In this case, though, the photograph seems overexposed, and the time of day / exposure levels have resulted in a blown sky and somewhat flat color.

I looked at your exif data, and I'm curious about your settings. Can you share why you used such a high ISO, and/or what you were after with the f/29?

I had to laugh when I read that you didn't realize the ISO was that high. That has happened to me many times... and I always resolve to check my settings before the next shoot. It happens to everyone, I think.

In bright light situations (such as you seem to have had), I keep my ISO as low as it can get. Generally speaking, I tend to increase ISO as a last resort -- when I can't get enough light via aperture and shutter speed to capture whatever it was I wanted. (This situation tends to come up for me in indoor sports, where the light isn't great, but I need a fast shutter speed to "stop" action.)

If you have access to that barn at different times of day, then trying various combinations of settings for several shots will tell you a great deal about your equipment. Have fun with it!
