Default Portrait session

Not a single photo but rather a series that I shot recently. The model is a tap dancer and choreographer.

I was not able to view your slide show link due to time constraints. You may get a better response if you post only one photo for a critique, along with some technical details such as shutter speed, aperture, camera and lens used as well as ISO.

the slideshow presentation is very nice.....those things usually bore me because they can be so excruciatingly slow.....nice pace, great music, and wonderful images.....

i like your full color shots the best because of that terrific red shirt your model wore.....

thanks...

It is a fun series to watch and an interesting presentation for the subject matter. I think it works for the material. Was the music you used in the slideshow playing while he was dancing for the shots too?

I like the shots of him with a more natural expression instead of smiling while he is in mid-leap. The smile looks kind of forced in that circumstance.

The outside shots have a dull grey to white sky. Were you facing right into the sun? Or was it really overcast that day? Those shots are good otherwise, but the sky really saps the interest from the images for me.

All in all though, good work. I haven't tried any kind of model or formal portraiture photography yet. Good use of lighting and flash for different shadow effects as well.

The whole presentation was done very well. I agree that the smile looked forced and not natural on some of the photos. Overall I liked the b & w the best.

Hi All,

Thanks for watching my slideshow and especially for your comments.

I was planning to play some music during the shooting, but simply fogot to bring any equipment with myself. I've chosen the music later on for the slideshow only on www.jamendo.com where lots of kind of music is available under Creative Commons.

Even my model is aware of his forced smile. I was trying to make some jokes, but I'm afraid it did not help a lot. It's definitely an area where I should improve: building the relationship with the model and creating a friendly atmosphere. (I know the guy for ages, by the way.)

The sky was that dull and overcast all day. The two main reason for the outside shots would have been the baluster or rails (sorry, English is not my first language) and the sky. The sky took a day off.

Thanks again.
