Somethign about this just doesnt work for me. I've tried and tried shots like this as well and I always end up deleting mine. Your colors are great and the sharp, maybe its too many pieces of grass, or not enough. I do know I'm not fond of the crop at the bottom. Cut off too many I think.

alenz,

Time of day and number of subjects will change the look of a shot. For example:

WeedFoxTail

25weeds

If your background were a little darker and more out of focus, it would be more about the " . . . feathers."

the example you show is of a closeup and a distant shot...I guess I don't see any other
comparison, other then that. ie., closeup/distant...I can't really establish whether the
closeup was taken at a different time of day from the distant one, hence what is the point here?
maybe I see the image I took, more as a story...the colors of fall were meant to merely
suggest fall...one "feather" would put total focus on that one feather and take away the
wholeness of the story...
it is always enlightening to me what others think of my photos...I thank you for your
input.

windrider86...your input is appreciated and I question myself where to crop at the bottom and I had no clear answer in my head..it was a never-ending amount of grass
''feathers''. and I didn't feel that I really knew what would work...my focus was in
capturing the colors and the feathers primarily.

Always about the possibilities, the examples are to show that the number of subjects and your distance from them can tell the viewer whatever you want. The crop is in the camera, and by lowering your position to shoot upward you could include Fall foliage in either example. More ideas, more options.

alenz....

i particularly like the colors of your image.....and the focus on the grass is truly striking.....i do feel that the composition itself is in need of rethinking.....i can't speak for jiminy, but i think that is where he was going with his critique.....

one of the harder lessons for me is how to compose a shot so that the eye is drawn to a particular part of the frame first.....if you have the opportunity or the inclination to reshoot.....i would suggest looking for a grouping of these beautiful feathers that pleases you,, look through your camera at it, and if you must, pat back some of the feathers around it so that the frame would appear less cluttered.....

again, i must say you did a fine job on shooting this image......

I agree with the other comments. It is a beautiful picture with nice colors int he background. I would try to the crop on the bottom about 1/2 in to where you get mostly the taller stalks and hay feathers. Great focus, right on the details on the feathers.
