Smile Took these a couple weeks ago....msg

This is probably the most "overdone" lighthouse in Maine, if not the east coast. It is Portland Head light in Cape Elizabeth, ME. At anyrate it is close, and I enjoy taking pics there. I am eager to see how I can improve. I have just started using a DSLR.

Thanks in advance.

It could be my imagination, but it appears the horizon may be off a bit. It's hard to tell because of the shape of the lighthouse, and because the slope of the land in the foreground. About the only thing to key off of is the vertical line of the corner of a couple buildings, and those lines are so short it's hard to tell. I just downloaded the first and checked in Photoshop, and yes, the horizon is definitely off by a degree or so. I use the selection tool to make a perfectly square and straight box to compare parts of the image against.

Nice images though - I wish I had subject matter like that right close at hand.

When I check the horizon just by moving the picture it seems good.I like it just the way it is. Great shot.

It's interesting - the upper shot is only off by a very tiny amount, but to the naked eye, it looks way off because of the slope there I think. The bottom shot is not off at all, but looks even more off to my naked eye. It's an illusion. As I said, nice shots, both.

stonecoast,

One is postcard-perfect, two I would have straightened to my eye, left. May you always enjoy taking pictures!

I like horizon, gives it an unsteady look, that goes well with the wavy sea

nice shots

Really a beautiful spot to take photographs. Your first picture looks sharp with nice colors and good light. I wonder how it would look if you had shifted it a little to the right so that the buildings were more to the left? The lighthouse draws my eye right to the center of the shot. Seeing a little more of the seething sea might make it seem more balanced. Perhaps a little more ocean at the bottom and a little less sky at the top. Of course, this is just my $.02.

I like them both. Personally, I would have cropped the top image a little more, and straightened the horizon.

The second I love unconditionally!!

Default Light House

Hi,
Nice exposure. Could have made the sky bluer with a polariser.
Composition would have been more appealing to me if the subject (Light House) were at the left or the right corner of the picture satisfying to rule of the thirds. I would have loved to see more of the surrounding buildings, which could have given more idea of the height of the lighthouse, or even a lower view point if it was possible.
The horizon is at the centre. The colors of the sea look so bluey and wonderful and this could have been highlighted by shifting the sky to the top third area in the picture.
But all said and done this comes as a clean picture.
Thanks
